NEED A PROOFREADER/COPYEDITOR? CHECK THIS OUT! Writing isn't easy, even for people who teach English. Mistakes in grammar, spelling and word usage are bound to creep in no matter how many times you read over your manuscript.  (As I tell my students, it's always easier to catch someone else's mistakes.) Therefore, if you have written a manuscript of any length and you need a set of fresh eyes to look it over, I recommend Lee Feathers, a professional proofreader, fact checker, and copy editor. She has combed over several of my manuscripts and, to put it mildly, has spared me considerable embarrassment.  In short, Lee has my highest personal recommendation. She has startd her own business, The Green Pine editorial services. In order to contact her about her fees and to arrange a reading of your manuscript, e-mail her at lee.feathers@gmail.com or check out her Web site: http://www.greenpineeditorial.com/GP/Home.html

Lately I have been reading Thomas S. Fiske's "The Courage Place," a novel about his great-grandfather, Jim Walker, who was assassinated by a thug named Bill Smoot in Owen County in 1874. Smoot's beef against Walker was that Walker had stood up to the KKK. But I don't want to give away too much of the story, which you should read yourself. Though in novelized form, the facts about the murder are historically accurate and Fiske has documents to prove it. The novel is full of period detail and some very funny turns of phrase, and it explores a dark moment in Kentucky history. Check out Mr. Fiske's website, and you can buy his book at Amazon.com.
